Oulu is known as the winter cycling capital of the world. Oulu’s cycling modal share of all trips is 20% and during wintertime the cycling modal share is around 10% topping many winter cities’ summer modal shares. Winter cycling is considered nothing special in Oulu among Oulu residents. It is just a normal way to get around for all ages and abilities. Even in harsh winter conditions that Oulu has, being located just 200km below the Arctic Circle.

For over a decade, we have been sharing information about Oulu winter cycling city secrets. As doing that, we have also talked with and consulted cities around the world, how to take steps forward in year-round cycling development. According to our experience, it takes more than just enthusiastic traffic planners and cycling network or street cross section design. Our knowledge lies deep within the urban area planning and decision-making processes.

Pekka Tahkola and Timo Perälä will be your instructors on this journey to reveal the secrets of the Oulu winter cycling success story. Pekka is also know as the “Oracle of Oulu”, and for a reason. Timo acted as the first ever cycling coordinator for the city of Oulu in early 2010’s and he knows the history, present and the future of Oulu as a cycling city.

    • Usual bottlenecks in different cities for slowing down or preventing year-round cycling development.
